Second of all, I hate to start the month off with a rant, but I'm gonna anyway. Consider it my present to me from me ;).
Ok, so a certain radio station in Victoria is holding a contest. It's a fun, fun, fun contest! Create a cheer and then the top 3 get chosen (by the radio station, not the on-air guys), and then the listeners get to vote on those to crown the winner with a trip to Cabo!
So, those who have entered so far, for the most part, have entered CHEERS. Not SONGS, but CHEERS - you know... words without a tune attached.
BUT... there's one guy. He's very creative and I love what he's doing. Unfortunately, he's doing SONGS, not CHEERS. He's taking songs which are already written down, changing the words like Weird Al, and then using THAT as his 'cheer'. If he gets his second attempt included in the top three I will have a HUGE problem with it and here's why:
It's. A. Song. Not. A. Cheer. A song is something with a tune (and he does end up singing it at the end, not 'rapping' it);
His 'cheer' is based on a song which was very popular in the '80's. It's not an original creation which the majority of the entries are. Some are short, some are long, but they're all original works of the entrants, not a theft of someone else's work. Would that lead into copyright infringement if chosen? Would the station then have to pay the writer of the original song a certain amount if they used the song? I think this could expand into a legal matter if they're not careful.
When the prize is something this big - a trip for two to an all-inclusive to Mexico - then play by your own rules. Stating the definition of the word cheer includes 'song' isn't going to work either. A cheer is a cheer and a song is a song. The on-air personalities said the judging panel has ruled that songs are out and cheers are in, and so it should be. This is a big prize that a lot of people are hoping to win, so it should be played by the rules that they created.
Did I enter? Yup! Will I be upset if I'm not in the top 3? Sure, but if I'm out and he's in... I'll be VERY angry and will end up turning away from the station to the only other station my radio can get in my dungeon at work. Will it matter to the station if I do? Probably not - they have a large number of listeners. But I'd hope, in the interest of fairness, that they'd understand the second song is not a cheer.
And honestly, I can write parody songs too. I can choose a song from the '80's or '90's and put different lyrics to it as an entry... but then it wouldn't be a cheer, it'd be a song, and they didn't ask for a song. They asked for a cheer.
