Bit of a rant ahead: Well, well, well... Day 10 of my self-imposed isolation and my how the world has changed in the past week! Mind you, there are still dummies out there who are going about business as usual - meeting up with friends and their kids at playgrounds or on the beach, hanging out at coffee shops and bakeries.
SERIOUSLY?! SHAKE YOUR FUCKING HEADS!!
If you are one of those who don't think there's any reason to physically distance yourself from others, then you are part of the problem and the reason why the human race is doomed.
This virus doesn't care who you are. Doesn't care how much money make or not. Doesn't care where you live. Doesn't care what you do for a living or not. Doesn't care what you drive, who you wear, what purse you carry, how long your fucking nails are, how long your beard is, or where your kids go to school. Doesn't care how old you are.
It WILL get you. It WILL get your kids. It WILL get your friends. It WILL get your parents. It WILL get your grandparents. It WILL get the people you interact with EVERY day if you don't stop going out unless necessary.
Just a note: groceries = necessary. Playdates in the park NOT necessary. Sitting and chatting over coffee outside the coffeehouse NOT necessary (pro tip: that's why it was 'to go' in the first place). Picnics on the beach with others VERY NOT necessary!!
Those idiot kids at spring break in FLA? 4 already tested positive for COVID. Italy? People are dying in unheard of numbers. USA? Tests done a week ago are coming back positive on an exponential curve straight up! BC Ferries workers testing positive. This is not a joke. Not a hoax. Not the 'flu'. Not a 'cold'. It will stop you from breathing. Breathing is important for living. My father died because he didn't get a flu shot, got sick and couldn't keep his meds down, then refused to go to the hospital. I know how this can get serious quickly, and we don't have a vaccine!
You MUST stay home if you can. You MUST reduce the risk to yourself and to others - wear gloves when shopping - and then put the gloves in the garbage, not on the ground (yes, there are asshats doing that. They're the ones who don't put their carts back either). You MUST wash your hands after touching ANYTHING.
Imagine your hands have been dipped in glitter. Then you touch your phone, your face, the door knob, the car keys, the car handle, the steering wheel. But you put your gloves on so the shopping cart (wiped down with the handy wipe that's there), ALL the food you get, the bank card, the shopping bags (which you can't bring your own anymore btw, so we're back to plastic and paper again) are all reasonably safe, but as you breathe on things and people in the store, the glitter on your face goes onto those people and things too. When you take your gloves off, glitter explodes EVERYWHERE while you put them in the garbage because you don't know how to take them off properly. There's still glitter stuck on your hands though, so you again drive home, transfer to the door knob, the bags, the food as you put it away. And THEN you wash your hands.
Wash. Your. Hands. Wipe down keyboards, mice, doorknobs, light switches, bannisters, stove and oven knobs and buttons, dishwasher buttons, fridge door handles, freezer handles, drawer and cupboard pulls. Wipe down in & outside car door handles, steering wheel.
Stop putting yourself and others at risk. And do it 'until'. Until we don't have to anymore. BC has more illnesses than Ontario and we're a smaller province by population! Our health care system can't treat those infections AND people in car accidents, or other catastrophic injuries at the same time.
I know it sucks. It's shitty for people in abusive homes. It's shitty for families with end-of-life patients in their hearts who may not be allowed to see them. It's shitty for the immunocompromised who can't defend against the common cold, never mind this! It's shitty for kids who don't get food unless they're at school. It's generally shitty at different levels for us all.
But we can get through the shitty by working together to stop this shitty virus in its tracks until it either dies off on its own or we get a vaccine.
Okay. Rant off. I know you, gentle reader, are doing all the right things. Please set the example and lead others to doing the right things too.
