Friday, 22 July & Weekend info

Chris Cornell was incredible!! I admit, I hemmed and hawed when the tickets first came on sale, but I thought I really liked his new single, so why not. Luckily I didn't wait too long - I got a single in the lower balcony just before it sold out.

First off, right at 7:30 (when it was supposed to start!) the opening act came on. Very eclectic but very good. Two guys. Just great. The place wasn't fully packed yet, but the crowd was well lubricated from the bar.

Right at 8:30, out came Chris. The place went wild. The Royal Theatre is a smaller venue, and he could have sold out Save on Foods Memorial Arena, easily! But it was just him and one other guy. That's it. Completely pared down and you got a great idea of the music instead of the noise you'll often hear in larger venues with full bands. For once, people weren't blabbing behind me, or encroaching on my space in the small seats - and every.single.seat was taken by then. People were stone silent during the songs and whistling and stamping feet in between.

So, he did some old Soundgarden stuff, some older original stuff, his new original stuff (Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart - my fave!), and then Nothing Compares 2U. WOW. Him on guitar and his buddy on cello. Simply stunning. That guy played the cello like he was playing a bass guitar, up and down the neck like a lover. Un.Be.Lieve.Able. Completely different from the Dixie Chicks version I heard two weeks ago, but just as powerful.

In between, Chris would talk about his songs, how much he loved Victoria, the record industry, invited the kid up on stage who made him a custom bike last time he was in town (and joked that it couldn't be the same kid, because this one was much taller than the last one, heh), and talked about his partner who is a multi-musician because he plays more than 4 instruments (we heard 3 - piano, mandolin and cello, but he considers himself a guitar player).

He did a cover of The Time's They Are A Changin', where he updated the lyrics and they were perfect.

I had to leave early, but I really debated if I should stay for the last hour before I left. It was outstanding, and the next time he comes back, I'm going to get a ticket without hesitation.

My next concert - SUNFEST!! WooT!!
