Tuesday, 12 July 2016 & Update Post

I hate going back to work after a few days off. At least it's payday this week. Something to look forward to I guess. That and the weather - supposed to be kinda nice for a few days in a row. I'm really just marking time til the Chris Cornell concert on the 21st and SunFest at the end of the month (Pit Passes and Camping, baby!! Oh yeah!!!)

I've been really lucky so far - going to see a lot of shows this summer. Some tickets I've won (Dixie Chicks, Jesse Roper, Spamalot), but most I've purchased because I can't always win - SunFest, Chris Cornell, Cleese & Idle, Dolly Parton (hey, don't judge). I'm just happy to be going to see some amazing musicians and artists, no matter how I get there.

I support as much local talent as I can too - I have a lot of friends who are musicians, and I sing and play guitar too so I get to jam with some amazing local players who are just so talented. We're so lucky to have an amazing amount of talented musicians around here. Unfortunately there aren't many places who have live bands anymore. They pay poorly - when I was gigging, it was around $600 for a 4-piece to play 4 sets. Apparently, it hasn't increased since then - and that was 15 years ago. It's a shame really. There are two local pubs where I live and they have live bands on Fridays so that's cool. And there are the local Legions who may or may not have regular bands in on Saturdays (always good for a jam if you're looking). But for the most part, bars will just play canned music with a DJ - it's cheaper and people will dance and drink.

If you get a chance to see a local band, please do so. Support them. We call it PLAYING, not WORKING because it's really fun to play music for people and we definitely don't do it for the money or fame. We feed off the energy the crowd puts out and it just turns into a great time. Even if the band is new and a little rusty, go anyway. They need the stage time to hone their craft. Even the Stones and Zep sounded a little crusty now and then at the start.

The Wolf has your chance at going to the Tragically Hip! They will play a Hip song throughout the day. When they do, they'll take 5 callers to qualify. Prize drawn on Friday. The morning show has your shot at Bathtub Weekend Kickoff tix to see some bands and have some fun.

The Wave has their usual too - Friday Morning Power Hour, Boston Pizza g/c at Retro Lunch, and the 5 @ 5 with a Great Canadian Oil Change. This week they'll take callers throughout the day to win Thursday night Sunfest Kick Off tix and on Friday they'll upgrade one of those winners to Weekend Pit Passes including camping. Sign up here for their weekly emails to enter to win a Friday night pass.

Coast has no new poll, opinions, or trivia. In the raffle area, there's a golf pack for Arbutus Ridge, Duncan Meadows or Cowichan Golf Club for 500 points and there is one set of Island Folk Fest tix up for raffle until 8pm on the 14th.

The Zone's morning zone has some kind of game with Pol in lieu of Dylan's Trivia until August. I'll listen to hear what you can win in the afternoon zone on Pol's Knowledge Bomb Fallout - it might be a set of 3 day GA passes to Rock the Shores. If you spot the Zone's Civic around this summer, snap a photo and hashtag it #zonesummercivic on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook (InstaTwitFace) to be entered to win it! Go here to enter to get the summer civic to take you places. The midday zone has your chance at a BBQ & Cooler.

The Q has Shamrocks tix on the Rock Door and Monster Truck tix at Western Speedway on Polka Monster. The morning show has BTBO tix to John Fogarty this week. When you hear one of his songs, text the daily code word to 250-475-1003 and they'll pick a random text to call back to win. The code changes each day so I'll try to keep an ear open to hear it (around 7:15 if I miss it after the song). At 1340 each day this week, play Hit or Hogwash on the midday show for your 4-pack of Sunfest kick-off party (Roadhammers and Neal McCoy - both awesome, btw). If you guess wrong, the vulture on line 2 gets the tix.

CFAX has no contests showing but I'll listen to see what they might have on air.
